Our Story

Frio Capital Group was built on one simple premise: the best investors are operators first.

Rick Frio has spent 25 years founding, scaling, and exiting ventures across logistics technology, energy infrastructure, and now data centers — not as a passive investor, but as a hands-on builder. He co-founded BestTransport.com, a SaaS TMS that grew into the leading freight management platform in North America and Europe, processing over $2 billion in annual transactions. He built MPR Transloading into the largest automated frac sand terminal in the Utica Shale region. He developed commercial and utility-scale solar projects across three states through IMC Energy. And today, through RTS Solutions and Datumsite Partners, he’s helping businesses cut LTL freight costs and navigate the exploding demand for data center infrastructure.

That breadth isn’t accidental — it’s the point. Frio Capital brings pattern recognition across sectors that most investors treat as separate worlds: freight, SaaS, fossil fuels, renewables, and digital infrastructure. When those worlds converge, opportunity follows.

Rick is a graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University, a speaker at logistics and energy industry conferences, and is deeply committed to the communities of the upper Ohio Valley.

Founder

Rick Frio is a serial entrepreneur at the intersection of technology, energy, and logistics — with a career defined by identifying emerging markets and building the infrastructure and platforms to serve them.

Technology & Freight Rick co-founded BestTransport.com, which became the leading SaaS Transportation Management System (TMS) in North America and Europe, processing over $2 billion in annual freight transactions. He served as CEO, President, and board director during the company’s growth into a recognized industry platform. Today, as a partner at RTS Solutions, Rick is applying that same expertise to help shippers achieve meaningful LTL freight savings through consolidated buying power and smart technology.

Data Center Site Selection As a partner at Datumsite Partners, LLC, Rick works with developers, investors, and hyperscalers to identify and evaluate data center sites — a discipline that draws on his deep background in infrastructure development, energy economics, and regional market intelligence.

Energy Rick is a partner at IMC Energy, a developer of commercial and utility-scale solar, community solar, EV charging infrastructure, and onsite generation projects across Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. He previously founded MPR Transloading and Energy Services, where he served as Chairman while the company built the largest automated flat-storage frac sand terminal in the Utica Shale region.

Capital & Entrepreneurship Rick serves as Managing Partner of Frio Capital Group, which supports and incubates early-stage ventures across his areas of expertise. He is a graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University, a speaker at logistics and energy industry conferences, and is active in charitable causes in the Wheeling, WV area.
